The Otaku Love Connection Volume 2
The school fandom just got more chaotic with a fujoshi and himedanshi enter the picture!
Disclaimer: This copy of The Otaku Love Connection was sent over by Square Enix for review consideration. All thoughts are my own.
One of my funniest series I’ve read this year is hands down The Otaku Love Connection which captured my heart with its first volume. If you thought we had seen all the fangirling in volume 1, just wait until they introduce the fujoshi and himedanshi in volume 2! You know things are about to get even crazier when you bring in two people who also obsess over their favorite ships.
Genre: Comedy, slice of life
Age Rating: Teen
Publisher: Square Enix
Status: Ongoing, volume two will be out on June 10th
Synopsis: For a synopsis of volume 1, please read my initial post about this series.
Wataru and Mashiro are now friends with their OTP! Yes, the fanboy and fangirl are living their wildest dreams now that they’re actually friends with the couple they idolize. While Yuzuru is basking in this new friendship, her boyfriend Chihiro is learning to tolerate the two otakus. When they find out that Chihiro has been struggling with his grades, the group decides to hold a study session to help get his grades up. During their study sesh they encounter Supika, the girl from a prestigious family who comes in number two in her test scores (Yuzuru is number one) and her friend/attendant Yuri who just like Chihiro really struggles with school. They’re not just regular students, these two happen to be otakus as well!
Despite Supika seeing Yuzuru as her competition, she sees her boyfriend as the object of her fujoshi fantasies. And Yuri… well he loves yuri! As a himedanshi, he loves seeing Supika and Yuzuru’s rivalry heat up. Will the addition of these two otakus shake things up or will they form an alliance?
Favorite Things:
Supika: The fujoshi with the bad ass hime cut was such a great addition! I loved her cold exterior but very warm and caring personality. Her being a tsundere and secretly the mom friend was such a lovely addition to this group of high schoolers. She reminded me a bit of Renge Houshakuji from Ouran High School Host Club.
Yuri: Although he stood out a lot less than Supika, he was still pretty likable. He’s such a chill dude that reminded me of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, but it’s funny seeing him get mad when another man interferes the wholesome yuri moments between Supika and Yuzuru.
Hashi/Supi: This is the ship name for Yuri and Supika. They make such a cute pair! I really love the fujoshi/himedanshi pairing and they also happen to have that master/servant trope going for them as well. I’m afraid that I get the hype once again.
Yuzuru and Chihiro: I really enjoyed seeing them get helped in this volume. They both come across as perfect people and a perfect couple, but in this volume we get to see some of their insecurities. I enjoyed seeing them face some of their fears and step out of their comfort zone.
The shopping trip at the end of this volume was so much fun to read! Plus all the characters looked so fashionable in regular clothing.
Rating: ★★★★★/ 5
I am still loving The Otaku Love Connection! This story is still so much fun to read from beginning to end. I love all the funny and unhinged otaku moments that are so over the top ridiculous, but this story also has plenty of sweet moments. Despite how odd this friend group is, they all seem to really care about each other.
